Shenmue III on kickstarter

Postby laserkid » Mon Jun 22, 2015 9:24 pm

So, whats everyone's opinion on this apparently divisive kickstarter?

For those not in the know, by some weird pixie magic, Yuji Naka has gotten the rights to make a Shenmue III, and with the backing from Sony and announcement at their E3 press conference, we now have a which was funded in less than 24 hours, currently sitting at 3.5 million.

The controversy involves some people thinking Sony shouldn't be using kickstarter for this, and others who don't mind.

Personally, I think this is awesome, its a AAA level game that's in demand, but companies don't seem to get that - but with kickstarter we can show the demand for this type of game does truly exist not simply by word of mouth, but by a far more valuable tracking tool, our wallets.

Plus, dagnabbit, Shenmue III - FINALLY! Finally, Ryo Hazuki's journey can end.

I'm excited as all heck. Shenmue 1 & 2 were two of my favorite games back in the day, and to see it revived like this - even through kickstarter - feels like a dream come true. Also, I heard that Sony is basically just using the kickstarter as a test to see how much *actual* interest there is for a Shenmue 3, and that they were going to back it financially if the kickstarter was a success.

Yeah, that matches my understanding as well, which I'm totally OK with, plus backing gives us super cool extras.

I just need to dig up some money to back this now. xDD

The whole internet seems to be blowing up about Shenmue. I honestly never played them having skipped the Dreamcast and Xbox. I've heard nothing but good things and the fact that is single handily birthed QTE's.

I didn't like II as much as the first one, but they're both solid games.

What was really cool about shenmue was it was such an open world. Imagine GTA3 level world detail on a Sega Dreamcast game, but instead of being some mob thug, you're a young man out to avenge his fathers murder, seen at the very start of the game (the opening cinematic still gives me chills).

It may not seem revolutionary now, but when this game came out, this intro was something brand new: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MvCO-VEbqpw
