Your favorite SHMUPS!

Postby Kazuo » Mon Jul 13, 2015 12:40 pm

My personal favorite is Gradius V on the Playstation 2

Why is it so good?
- Slightly easier difficulty. When you die you respawn right where you died instead of going back to the checkpoint. This also allowed the player to recapture their Options. Being able to retain some powerups and level progress was something needed in the Gradius games.
- Mind breaking asteroid level. The level design is all over the place that makes some lesser used weapons very powerful. Usually you would never use the backwards shooting ability but when the asteroid level starts going in reverse, it is mandatory.

Definitely give it a look if you have a PS2 lying around.

Not a huge shmupper, honestly, but my favorites probably Nanostray on the Nintendo DS, mainly because I could get a decent ways through it before I, as in all shmup games I've played, fail endlessly at a level.

There is SO MANY of them that are good, really good and even better.
Some that are cults, others that are totally unknown or underrated.

[ SHMUPs ]

So here is a little list -not in order of preference- of shmups that are in my heart for some specific reasons.
You'll find generally a playthrough, maybe a review and always the soundtrack to listen to~

◉ BORDER DOWN (NAOMI / DREAMCAST) (2003):

◉ UNDER DEFEAT (NAOMI / DREAMCAST / X360 / PS3) (2005):

◉ EINHÄNDER (PSX) (1997)

◉ R-TYPE Δ (PSX) (1998)

◉ G-DARIUS (TAITO FX-1B / PSX / PC / PSN) (1997)

◉ JUDGMENT SILVERSWORD -Rebirth Edition- (Wonderswan Crystal / X360) (2004)

◉ OMEGA FIVE (XBLA) (2008)

◉ REVOLVER360 (PC / XBLA) (2010)

◉ GYNOUG (SEGA MEGA DRIVE / Virtual Console) (1991)

◉ THUNDER FORCE IV (SEGA MEGA DRIVE) (1992)

◉ HYPER DUEL (Arcade / Saturn) (1993)

◉ SINE MORA (XBLA / PSN / STEAM / PS Vita) (2012)

◉ GREAT MAHOU DAISAKUSEN (Capcom CPS-2) (2000)

◉ TROUBLE WITCHES (Doujin / XBLA / PSN / STEAM / TAITO TYPE X²) (2009)

◉ METAL BLACK (TAITO F1 / Saturn) (1991)

[ RUN'N GUNs ]

Yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah... Y E A H \o/
They're Run'N Guns but... who cares.
They were important to me in many ways, and I find them to fit somehow in the shmup's world too,
many things make them similar on many levels. And also because they're just objectively awesome~

◉ GUNSTAR HEROES (SEGA MEGA DRIVE / XBLA / PSN / PS2 / STEAM / Virtual Console):

◉ ALIEN SOLDIER (SEGA MEGA DRIVE / PS2 / VIRTUAL CONSOLE / STEAM ) (1995)

◉ The (real) METAL SLUG Series -aka 1, 2, X & 3- (SNK NEO GEO MVS / SNK NEO GEO CD / PSX / SATURN / Virtual Console / PSN / XBLA / STEAM) (1996/1998/1999/2000)

Tyrian, not just for Alexander Brandon's amazing soundtrack, but the variety of weapon choices, the fun dialog boxes, hunting for secret paths to go through the map, etc. For its time, a PC classic.

The kiddy port of Twin Eagle for the NES, far removed from its arcade version, but perfect for a kid with a shiny new NES.

Gradius III for the SNES, for being awesome.

Ikaruga.

Forgot about this thread...
Might add Life Force for NES. Mainly because it was one of the first SHMUPS I'd ever played, and the first I ever played on my shiny new NES. And ↑↑↓↓←→←→BA win.

Ikaruga for Gamecube is one of my favorite snags as far as my collection goes.

Kaz as i mentioned in the stream try over horizon if you can on the nes. If you can't get a copy of the PAL game check out a longplay on youtube it has some cool music and some unique shmup boss battles. A very underrated and overlooked nes game since it was only released in europe.
